The UK's highly respected Somerset Willow Company has been weaving fine wicker basketware and and furniture for four generations. A strong family business, the Hill Family workshop manages their woven coffins from start to finish, overseeing the manufacture every step of the way.

They're heavily involved in the growing of the willow; they bring their weavers (9 of them, now) through a five year training process; and they're known throughout the UK for their fine high-quality craftsmanship. (They're also well-known for their hot-air balloon baskets!)

Somerset creates three main styles of coffin: a traditional one with "shoulders" that taper down to the end at the feet, a round-end style, with both ends curved and beginning in June 2008, we are now offering the American Viewing Casket. our sturdiest woven fiber coffin. An simple unbleached cotton liner, tied into the weave, is included with every coffin.

Somerset also offers a selection of naturally dyed willow bands in a variety of colors, carefully woven along the sides of the coffin as an accent strip, and/or as a wrap for the willow handles.

Not all sizes and colors are in stock in the US at this time. However, our stocking resellers can special-order any style you like that you see on the Somerset Willow website. Additional customizations such as more color bands, and overlarge or custom sizes are also available.

UK's Natural Coffins - Tried and Tested

Hundreds of Somerset Willow coffins have already been used for green burial and cremation around the UK, and they're truly one of our best "tried and tested" items. They're recommended by funeral directors and cemeteries alike.

Ecoffins USA

 

Ecoffins USA is importing  Fair Trade Certified Bamboo coffins to the U.S. and the Natural Burial Company is distirbuting them.

With over a decade of experience in producing thousands of coffins for established woodland burial grounds in England, this family factory located in the Hunan Province of China is regarded as a model in the region for the support of its employees and their traditional handicrafts. All aspects of production encourage the use of traditional skills, allowing the craftsmen to maintain their time-honored livelihoods.

The bamboo used in these coffins is a variety that pandas will not eat, grown and cut under license from the Chinese government. These coffins are suitable for cremation as well as burial, with wooden runners on the bottom, and include cotton liners and bamboo headrests. A range of styles and sizes, including some for pets, are available.
