EveryBody Coffin (tm)

Everybody_coffin800pix300dpiThis affordable biodegradable casket option is a knocked-down coffin kit made from plywood without added chemicals like formaldehyde (quick, clean breakdown!). It can be put together without tools and retails for only a few hundred dollars.

Customers who want to minimize their impact on the environment can use the EveryBody(TM) Coffin for a 'cleaner cremation' or a natural burial in cemeteries that require non-toxic and non-synthetic materials in the coffins that are buried.

Produced by the Everybody Company, based in Europe - you can visit their website for even more product information. According to the EveryBody(TM) Coffin website:

"Everybody Company creates commercially viable solutions for the challenges that our world faces. We are committed to creating competitive and attractive products that meet the needs of humanity, while promoting respect for people and planet."

Everybody_coffin_details2 It's perfect for cremation, too. It's sturdier than the alternative cardboard containers, with a clever slide-together locking  "click-to-construct "  design. It ships flat, in a compact box to the retail customer and banded on pallets to the trade, and stores easily anywhere you could fit  a door.

"Watching how bodies were managed during the 2004 tsunami motivated a Dutch engineer to design a coffin that was affordable, accessible, and suitable.  The EveryBody(TM)  Coffin is designed to overcome the high cost and inherently inefficient coffin style for mass fatality planning. While designed for mass fatalities, the EveryBody(TM)  Coffin has become an ideal coffin for natural burial.  The coffin's natural, non-finished Ceiba Pentandra wood is strong but flexible.  The patented design allows it to be stored flat and assembled without tools."

ARKA Ecopod - the Recycled Paper Coffin

PodblueARKA's Ecopod is a revolutionary design in coffins made from naturally hardened, 100% recycled paper - mainly newsprint and office paper - and a non-toxic natural hardener, the Ecopod is ideal for a green burial or clean cremation.

KGW TV in Portland did a story on the Natural Burial Company and the Ecopod just before we moved our business to the "Emerald City" - http://www.kgw.com/sharedcontent/VideoPlayer/videoPlayer.php?vidId=99369&cat
Id=131
. As you can see by the video, the ARKA Ecopod is about a lot more than simply a biodegradable coffin - it's about "going out" in a whole new way.

To learn even more about the Ecopod and the inspiration behind Hazel Selina's original design - a cross between a seedpod and an Egyptian sarcophagus - you can visit their website: http://www.ecopodcoffins.com. There are some wonderful stories on their press pages (the Ecopod's even been in a museum and a Gay Pride parade!) and they've got a small workshop in Brighton, UK, where each one is molded painstakingly by hand.

Ecopods_all_150pix72dpi_2Hundreds of Ecopods have been successfully used throughout the UK since 1998.  The Ecopod is extremely durable - it weighs around 40+ pounds and yet even the small size can carry 200 pounds! It is covered in handmade mulberry leaf and recycled silk paper. Each color has its own silkscreened design - Blue=Doves, Red=Aztec Sun, Green=Celtic Cross. (Click here for colors and patterns).

White silk paper and Gold are available as options. White is perfect for customization, but more care must be taken in handling.

There are two sizes:

Small - 5'8" inner height, max, 200 pounds
Large - 6'2" inner height, max 250 pounds

Due to its unique and handmade nature, the Ecopod is in extremely limited supply in both the US and the UK and pre-orders are strongly suggested. Contact the Natural Burial Company to find out about pre-ordering one if the US is out of stock.

An simple unbleached cotton liner, tied into the weave, is included with every coffin.

Somersetviewingcasketcornerdscn3085Somerset also offers a selection of naturally dyed willow bands in a variety of colors, carefully woven along the sides of the coffin as an accent strip, and/or as a wrap for the willow handles.

Not all sizes and colors are in stock in the US at this time. However, our stocking resellers can special-order any style you like that you see on the Somerset Willow website. Additional customizations such as more color bands, and overlarge or custom sizes are also available.
